The Babylonian Talmud has to be considered as the most precious Hebrew manuscript of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. It is the only surviving manuscript from the Middle Ages which contains the text of the Babylonian Talmud almost comprehensively. With its ancient appearance and arrangement and with its numerous variants, amendments and corrections it offers a unique insight in the complete work, representing the earlier state of tradition at a time long before the first print. The inestimable importance for scholarly research, compounded by the great ideational appreciation of the work, resulted in a corresponding pressure to make the codex publicly accessible. The ultimate cause of the digitisation was the desire of the national library of Israel to offer a digital copy of this manuscript on its website. This request will now be complied with by offering the possibility of posting a link to the server of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. At the same time, the digitisation offers the perspective that the use frequency of this manuscript, which is no longer acceptable from point of view of conservation, can be reduced considerably.
