Book Illustrations on Virgil's Aeneis 1502-1840 (Vergilius pictus digitalis)
Out of all editions of Virgil (P. Vergilius Maro, 70-19 BC; also: Vergil, Virgile, Virgilio) published between 1502 and 1840 (editions of the Opera or of the Aeneis; translations) forming part of the collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and containing illustrations (around 200 of over 500 printed works of Virgil), the (almost exclusively black and white, only rarely coloured) xylographs or copper etchings (as well as directly associated text pages such as indications of origin for these illustrations) were digitised. Besides approximately 2000 single pages with illustrations from editions with only figured frontispieces or with small illustration cycles (as a rule one image for each of the 12 Aeneis books) some selected early prints containing larger series of images on Virgil (several with 50 or more illustrations) are digitised comprehensively, so that also the direct image/ text reference is comprehensible. A printed handbook compiled by Werner Suerbaum in 2008 catalogues this thesaurus of illustrations on Virgil.
