Long-term preservation: Technology
The frontend of the Library Archiving and Access System consists of two different basic technical components. Each of them was adopted for specific purposes.
- The Content of the Munich Digitization Center is being managed by the so-called Zentrale Erfassungs- und Nachweisdatenbank (ZEND), a powerful and complex selfmade tool, designed to manage all workflow tasks.
- All the other electronic resources of the library wich have to be archived are currently being processed with DigiTool.
The archival storage of the data is being done by the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)
archival system of the LRZ. TSM is a client-server-application for heterogeneous environments and bases on open standards, e. g.
the IEEE Mass Storage Reference Model. The system provides the essential functionalities in long-term preservation.

Der Aufbau des Bereitstellungs- und Archivierungssystems BABS folgt dem Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) Referenz Modell und berücksichtigt somit alle notwendigen Prozesse der Langzeitarchivierung. Der Ausbau geschieht modular, BABS ist dabei bestrebt, vorhandene technische Lösungen zu integrieren und z. B. die reibungslose Zusammenarbeit mit den vorhandenen Bibliothekssystemen zu organisieren.
